Planning on Wendover presented challenges, not in the least the need to
avoid the 73 orienteering controls out in the woods. This meant that I
could only place one TX down in the valley and had to use the flatter
areas. Bearing in mind the amount of climb involved I was wary about
making the courses to long, however I needn't have worried as the times
were impressive, especially from Mike. I'll bear this in mind the next
time !
The control in the valley seemed to cause some competitors a few
problems, and placing a control in the big depression also caused a few
problems. Otherwise the controls were pretty straightforward.
I think having a long and a short course worked out OK as everybody also
did the Fox-Oring course. My apologies to those who were inconvenienced
by me having to get the controls in early. My fault entirely, I should
have made it clear in the instructions and provided a course closure
time. We had to be out of the woods by 5pm. Also one 80m TX got trodden
on and effectively got turned off. I'll remember next time to put them
out of the way of feet.
Thanks to Dave Deane for the loan of the equipment. The 2m TXs on 20
hour delay were brilliant. They came up on the second even after being
out in sub-zero temperatures overnight. Thanks also to all those who
helped to collect the gear afterwards.
