Radio Society of Great Britain
Dudmaston 16 March 2008
Summary
The event is incorporated into an Orienteering event promoted by the Harlequins Orienteering Club. A competition will be held using both the 144 MHz band and the 3.5 MHz band. The area being used is located to the west of Birmingham.
Location
Dudmaston near Bridgnorth Click to see a map extract.
Dudmaston is a National Trust Estate. The area is delightful, undulating woodland - mostly managed plantation with ongoing forestry work. There are areas of bramble and some rhododendron but a good path system so that the worst can be avoided.
The car park will be in a field approached via a lane at GR SO740899, off the A442 Kidderminster to Bridgnorth Road, 4km south of Bridgnorth. Registration, start and finish for the ARDF courses will be in the main car park/assembly field. They will not be co-located with the orienteering start/finish/assembly.
Format of Event
The event will conform to the general principles of IARU events, but will be less formal than a Championship.
For the 144 MHz competition, there will be five hidden transmitters and a 120 minute time limit will be apply. The 3.5 MHz competition will have three hidden transmitters and a 90 minute time limit.
However, competitors will not be required to run in "age classes". On 144 MHz, they will be able to select at Registration which of three courses, comprising five, four or three specified transmitters they wish to run. On 3.5 MHz, there will also be a choice of courses, comprising either three or two specified transmitters.
For the purposes of results, only those transmitters specified for the course selected at Registration will count. Competitors will be ranked in a single list, firstly by number of transmitters found and then by time taken.
The IARU rules for the distance between transmitters and from the start and finish will be relaxed for both competitions in that transmitters will be more than 400m from the start rather than the 750m distance specified in the rules. In other respects the distance rules will be implemented (transmitters are at least 400m from each other and from the finish).
Sport Ident (SI) punching will be used for the 144MHz event and may be used for the 3.5MHz event after lunch as well. Competitors who possess an SI chip are asked to bring it to the event. A small number of SI chips will be available for hire from Radio O registration at a cost of £1.
The decision regarding the use of SI or pin punching for the 3.5 MHz event will be taken on the day of the competition.

Entries
Entry fee is £6 per entrant payable on the day. This fee is paid in its entirety to the Harlequins O Club (after the event by the organisers) to cover the cost of land access, map, loo hire etc. As noted above, SI 'dibbers' can be hired for £1.
There is no extra fee to pay to enter the second competition unless you wish to purchase a second copy of the map for use on 3.5MHz. The cost of this is £1.
The results will be posted on this web site as soon as possible after the event.
Procedures
In accordance with the informality of the event the organisers will not require you to deposit your receiver in a pound before the transmitters start sending. They do expect you to respect the spirit of this concession by refraining from using your receiver until reporting to officials in the start area and then only under their supervision.
Safety
Competitors are responsible for their own safety and take part at their own risk. No smoking in the forest. Whistles MUST be carried (the emergency signal is 6 blasts repeated at 1 minute intervals). No whistle - no start!
The main A442 road along the south west side of the area is extremely dangerous and under no circumstances may competitors set foot on any part of it, including the verges.
